How Effective Are Retinol Eye Creams In Reducing Anti-Ageing Signs? Know From A Dermatologist

When it comes to skincare, there are several important factors to consider. First and foremost, your skin type plays a crucial role in determining which products will be most effective for you. Whether you have oily, dry, combination, or sensitive skin influences your choices. In addition, specific skin concerns, such as acne or hyperpigmentation, can guide you toward targeted treatments and formulations.

Age is another significant factor that may drive you to look for products that address specific needs. While it’s important to care for your entire face, the delicate skin around your eyes requires special attention too. Here’s when retinol eye creams may come in handy. Let’s find out what a dermatologist had to say about them.

Understanding The Role Of Retinol Eye Creams

Dr Trupti Agarwal, Consultant Dermatologist, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, said, “The skin around your eyes is more delicate and sensitive than on other parts of your face, which calls for specialised care. This area has a reduced number of oil glands and less collagen, making signs of ageing more visible. Additionally, repeated facial expressions, like smiling, can lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles over time.”

Hence, the dermatologist-recommended eye creams that contain retinol are specifically designed for this sensitive area to combat signs of ageing and fatigue.

Speaking with the OnlyMyHealth team, she explained, “Retinol is an effective anti-ageing ingredient that works particularly well around the eyes. It helps to maintain moisture levels and boosts collagen production, leading to improved skin texture. Retinol is known to promote cellular turnover and stimulate collagen synthesis, resulting in firmer, more vibrant skin. It can also enhance the appearance of dull or dehydrated skin and diminish dark spots. By encouraging collagen production and cell renewal, retinol helps to reduce the fine lines and wrinkles that are often present around the eyes.”

While it can take several months to a year to see results from using retinol to treat ageing skin, one study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that retinol takes approximately 12 weeks to show significant anti-ageing effects on the skin. Researchers came to this conclusion through a clinical study where participants applied a retinol formulation to their faces for 12 weeks. After this period, a significant reduction in facial wrinkles was observed, indicating that retinol is effective in improving skin appearance and reducing signs of ageing.

How To Incorporate It In Your Skincare Routine

According to Dr Agarwal, one can begin using retinol 1-2 times a week and gradually increase the frequency based on one’s skin’s tolerance.

“While topical retinols are generally safe for use around the eyes, it’s important to avoid applying them directly to the eyelids or too close to the eyes to prevent dryness,” she warned, adding that pairing a moisturiser with the retinol cream can help minimise irritation.
